PEOPLE OF FAITH CHALLENGE DEMOCRATS:
Need for American Ummah to be assertive and speak up

(ED NOTE: Masha Allah, various Muslim organizations are doing splendid work in terms of joining the mainstream American political arena. Muslims as one of the interfaith groups in the U.S. must not only be clear but also assertively speak up as to where we stand on specific issues including abortion, reinforcing that marriage can only be between a man and a woman, climate change et.c.

In a survey, 70 percent of Americans believe that other religions have important points. How best can the American Ummah as one of the non-Christian faiths in their personal practice of Islam on a daily basis reinforce on above "important points". Anything of importance has an intrinsic value attached to it. For a true practicing Muslim who is honest, sincere, hard working, caring and above all a good citizen, the qualities by default is in itself an intrinsic value that would to the average non-Muslim be considered important.

Several surveys has revealed the same conclusion that Americans are more scared of athiests and agnostics than Muslims. How best then can the American Ummah team up with other interfaith groups to face the common threat ? We have told before and we will repeat it again, that as Muslims we have to actively get involved in INTERFAITH work and focus on the common points that we the children of the ABRAHAMIC FAITH have.

There are active destructive forces working silently against the people of ALL FAITHS. For example one such force is calling for the abolishment of the five thousand year old institution of MARRIAGE. Visualize a society where there is no marriage.

As it is the purity of marriage is already in the process of being diluted by gays and lesbians demanding the right to marriage. MARRIAGE is a union between a husband and wife. A union between a gay and lesbian is NOT heterosexual and therefore it is NOT appropriate for them to use the heterosexual term of marriage to describe their union. They are more than welcome to come up with a new word or terminology to describe their union besides the current usage of "domestic partners" et.c.

Besides certain forces working to destroy marriage, the radical feminists are yet one more threat that we PEOPLE OF FAITH need to unitedly and peacefully deal with. Some ultra-radical feminists are arguing against the usage of the word SLUT. While Islam, Christianity and Judaism value the HONOR of women, they compare it to a bottle or glass and argue in terms of what is a big deal in using or reusing a bottle several times. NOW VISUALIZE A SOCIETY WHERE THERE IS NO MARRIAGE AND NO SEXUAL RESTRICTIONS. Honestly, do you really expect the society to be STABLE AND PEACEFUL ?

It sounds like the contemporary society is developing certain culturally sick symptoms. It is here that the important role of FAITH comes in as a vaccination to prevent the infection of such social sickness.

We appeal to all faiths to come together, focus on the common points epecially as it relates to working for the smallest unit of the society (A FAMILY) to be stable and strong. Part of such work has to be done not only through involvement in our respective religious institutions but also through our active political involvement and this includes contributing our faith's perspectives in the coming elections this NOVEMBER.

In below article, please note the conspicuous absence of Muslims as one of the interfaith groups)

"During the recent Democratic National Convention, religious leaders and people of faith who have been invited to the table at this week's Democratic National Convention are not sitting quietly with their hands in their laps.

1. The Head of a large African-American denomination challenged the party on abortion.

2. An Orthodox Jewish Rabbi raised his voice about school choice.

3. A Evangelical Christian author warned against Democrats who mock believers.

"It is important that people of faith are being listened to just like other constituencies, that we are not marginalized", said Alexia Kelley of Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, which has pressed the party to support policies aimed at reducing abortion rates.

RELIGION HAS PLAYED A VISIBLE ROLE AT THE CONVENTION, STARTING WITH AN INTERFAITH SERVICE AND CONTINUING TUESDAY WITH THE PARTY'S FIRST CAUCUS MEETINGS FOR PEOPLE OF FAITH.
Beneath "Pro-Family Pro-Obama" placards, a range of faith leaders - and Joshua DuBois, Barack Obama's religious affair director - framed poverty, climate change, human rights and abortion as not just policy causes but moral ones.

Let's be honest: RELIGION HAS BEEN USED AND ABUSED BY POLITICS", said Jim Wallis, an evangelist and editor of Sojourners Magazine. PEOPLE OF FAITH, he said, "SHOULD SPEAK PROPHETICALLY MORE THAN IN A PARTISAN WAY".
Wallis said religious voices lobbying Democrats have gotten results, including language in the platform that aspires to reduce poverty rates by half in the next decade. Religious groups also had a hand in crafting platform language that pledges to support women who decide against having abortions; that was possible in part because the platform also strengthened wording supporting "a woman's right to choose a safe and legal abortion".

Donald Miller, an evangalist and author stated: "Democrats are reaching out to us, and I am not naive as to why - they want our votes". "But they won't get them and keep them unless they continue the momentum of adopting policies that promote the sanctity of life". Miller gave a two minute prayer to close Monday's Democratic Convention. Miller cited progress along these lines - including abortion. His other priorities - poverty, global warming - also reflect a widening evangelical agenda that might benefit Democrats.

Rabbi Tzvi Hersh Weinreb, Executive Vice President of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America gave a keynote address at the interfaith service. Later he spoke "for freedom of choice in education". He was in support of government assistance, such as tax credits, for parents who want to put their children in private schools.

Bishop Charles Blake, head of the six million member Church of God in Christ, spoke of "disregard for the lives of the unborn".

Democratic Representative John Lewis of Georgia, after speaking at a luncheon hosted by the nonpartisan FAITH AND POLITICS INSTITUTE insisted that the party's outreach to faith communities is sincere, and that voices will be heard. "The majority of our party people, they are people of faith," he said.. "When we get elected, we don't check our faith at the door. We may not wear it on our sleeve".

FEELING HUNGRY CAN MAKE YOU HAPPY:

Study: The increase in a hormone called ghrelin has antidepressant effect. (Robin Nixon) www.msnbc.msn.com

When our bodies notice we need more calories, levels of a hormone called ghrelin increase. Ghrelin is known to spur hunger, but new research conducted on mice suggests this may be a side effect of its primary job as a stress-buster. Mice are thought to be good analogues for humans in tests like these. The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health and other organizations, is detailed in the July 2008 of the journal NATURE NEUROSCIENCE.

HADITH ON FULFILLING ONE'S APPETITE:

(ED NOTE: Prophet Mohammed (SAW) recommended us to eat food about one third of our appetite. If only above hadith was implemented, obesity and many other related illnesses would be significantly reduced.)

The Calorie Restriction (CR) movement is rapidly growing. CR devotees are motivated, at least at first, by animal studies that show eating 20 to 30 percent less than considered adequate EXTENDS LIFE SPAN.

While CR's ANTI-AGING effect is likely operating through a different mechanism, Michael Lutter of the University of Southwestern Medical Center would not be surprised that the above prolonged diet also gives CR followers a mood boost.

(ED NOTE: Today in the 21st Century, we see how our loving Prophet Mohamed's (SAW) advice in terms of the quantity of intake of our appetite, if strictly followed could have saved millions of lives, millions of dollars in medical costs, and untold sufferings due to diseases and other complications arising out of obesity. We acknowledge that there there other reasons of obesity too, but the quantity of intake is also one of the important aspects. Below is a sample of statistics on obesity).

DEATHS:

Obesity kills approximately 300,000 US adults each year.
Source: Journal of the American Medical Association, 1999; 282:1530 –38

MAGNITUDE OF THE PROBLEM:

64.5% of all American adults, 120 million, are overweight or obese. 31% are obese, 59 million.
Source: Weight Watchers International

People weighing 30 or more pounds over a healthy weight could shorten their lifespan by up to seven years. Carrying an extra 10 to 30 extra pounds could shorten it by three years.

WOMEN:

Obesity and overweight women face a significantly increased risk of having babies with heart abnormalities and other birth defects.

ECONOMICAL COST:

Obesity costs the U.S. economy more than tobacco or alcohol, about $117 billion per year.

CANCER:

Obesity is linked to a wide variety of cancers and may lead to 90,000 cancer deaths each year.

OTHER MEDICAL COMPLICATIONS:

Obesity substantially increases one's risk of developing many chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, Type II diabetes, heart disease, stroke, gall bladder disease and cancer of the breast, prostate and colon, liver disease, lower back pain, sleep apnea, stroke, and urinary incontinence.

The American Heart Association stated that Obesity is on the top of the list as a major heart attack risk factor. Other diseases related to obesity include depression, and cardiovascular disease.
Source: Heidi Adams: One Nation, Overweight

CHILDREN:
According to the National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases IDDK) and My.WebMD.com website, over 25% of children in the United States are obese.

There has been an astounding increase in childhood obesity in the last ten years. Technology, fast food, and the super sized mentality are contributing factors for childhood obesity. Our children are less active now than they have ever been. Video games and television help to keep our children from being active outdoors.

Children who suffer from childhood obesity are more likely to suffer from adult obesity than children who have a healthy body weight. Over 85% of children diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes are obese. Children should not have to suffer from this disease. Parents should take an active role in raising children to be healthy conscious individuals so they will be less likely to suffer from these diseases. Obesity not only can cause early childhood diabetes, but can be damaging to the self esteem of these children".

(ED NOTE: From above statistics, it is clear that we need to affirm our right to follow the specific hadith. Muslim parents are encouraged to inculcate in their children regarding practicing above mentioned Prophet Mohamed (SAW) recommendations.)

(3) (Zakat) - Happiness comes from "giving"

New research by Psychologist Elizabeth Dunn at University of British Columbia (funded by Hampton Research Grant) reveals that when you give out money for gifts for friends or charitable donations, they GET A BOOST IN HAPPINESS WHILE THOSE WHO SPEND ON THEMSELVES GET NO SUCH CHEERY LIFT.

Statistical analysis revealed PERSONAL SPENDING had NO LINK with a persons happiness, while SPENDING ON OTHERS AND CHARITY was significantly related to a BOOST IN HAPPINESS.

In a separate study of 13 employees at a Boston-based firm, the researchers found that employees who devoted more of their profit-sharing bonus TO OTHERS reported greater overall happiness than those who spent the windfall on their own needs.”

“The happiness “hit” from GIVING may last a bit longer if the “warm glow” from donations lasts longer than the hit from ONE’s OWN consumption,” said Paul Dolan, an Economic Professor at the Imperial College – London in England. Dolan was not involved in Dunn’s study.

“It does not surprise me at all that people find giving money away very rewarding,” said Aaron Ahivia, Associate Professor of marketing at the University of Michagan-Dearborn, who was not involved in above study.

Another idea is that charitable spending helps a person express a certain identity. Ahuvia stated: “When you give away money you are making that same kind of purchase, only you are doing it in a more effective way”. “What you are really trying to buy is MEANING TO LIFE – GIVING AWAY MONEY TO A CAUSE YOU BELIEVE IN IS A MORE EFECTIVE PURCHASE THAN BUYING a T-Shirt that says “Save a Whale”.

(Source of above from: "Key to Happiness: Give Away Money" By Jeanna Bryner 3/20/2008)

(ED NOTE: Now that you are aware of additional proven benefits of GIVING, what better month could you give your donations and charity then this blessed month of Ramadan. We acknowledge that you already may have several options to give your donations and respect the same. In no way do we want you to reach the point of COMPASSION FATIGUE.

However should you want to expand the choices you have before picking a particular source to which you would like to donate, please include below three agencies NISWA, ICCCT and ANERA in your list of potential agencies that you could consider to donate. Even if you decide not to donate, the information below we hope will be useful to understand the different services offered by three agencies. (ED NOTE: Would the UMMAH be a silent speactator to allow our Muslim children to be raised in non-Muslim homes increasing possibilities of the child to be raised a non-Muslim possibly eating pork, going to Church or Synagogue and basically becoming a non-Muslim adult ? The consequences impact not only the child in question but also carrying the non-Muslim faith for the future generation of the child).

Please contact NISWA if
you want to be a foster family. Open your heart and home to a displaced child whether Muslim or non Muslim.

(3) AMERICAN NEAR EAST REFUGEE AID (ANERA)
GAZA & WEST BANK - LAND OF PALESTINIANS

(Ed Note: Global Ummah continues to pray for an independent Palestinian nation. LONG LIVE THE PALESTINIANS).

ANERA is a leading provider of development, health, education and employment programs to Palestinian communities and impoverished families throughout the Middle East.

ANERA Scholarship Schools

Since 1979 ANERA has provided scholarships to students in the Middle East through generous gifts from private donors. Every child in the Scholarship Program needs special assistance. Some are orphans and others live in refugee camps. A substantial number have severe physical impairments that require special educational and rehabilitative services. Almost all come from very poor homes.

Living in a region of the world that remains extremely volatile, the children in ANERA’s Scholarship Program are part of the most vulnerable population group. They need the special services and fine education offered in the schools they attend in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon and Jordan.

To ensure that children are educated in a healthy setting, ANERA maintains strict standards when it chooses partner schools. We work with eight institutions that demonstrate high standards in education and rehabilitation services. Each school has a solid record as a registered institution with a governing board and strong financial accountability.

ANERA currently supports over 200 children, ages 4-17, in eight institutions through the Scholarship Program. Sponsoring a student is not expensive. For only $240 a year or $20 a month, anyone can make a child’s dream of an education a reality

Beirut, Lebanon Al-Kafaat Rehabilitation Institute educates over 1,200 mentally and physically challenged students to prepare them for gainful employment.

Gaza City, Gaza Atfaluna Society for Deaf Children, the only school of its kind in Gaza, provides special education for over 150 hearing-impaired elementary and high school children.

East Jerusalem
Dar El-Tifl educates over 900 poor and orphaned girls, including 300 boarders from kindergarten through high school.

BRIEF HISTORY:

The Arab-Israeli War of 1967 left hundreds of thousands of Palestinians homeless and impoverished. As various international entities struggled to respond, representatives from a small group of charities and emergency relief committees met in Washington, DC and Detroit, Michigan to galvanize efforts to provide immediate assistance to the victims of the conflict.

The result was the creation of American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA), with seed funding provided by the founding charitable organizations and a matching grant from Near East Emergency Donations (NEED), a consortium of U.S. corporations working in the Middle East.

From these modest beginnings, ANERA began decades of committed work responding to the critical needs of the Palestinian people and others caught in regional conflicts. Initially supported entirely by private gifts, our efforts over the years have consistently attracted new sources of funding, including grants from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), as well as partnerships with numerous private foundations, corporations, non-governmental organizations, and civic and religious groups in the United States and other countries.

Incorporated in 1968 to help ease the suffering of Palestinian refugees after the Arab-Israeli War of 1967, ANERA is non-political and non-religious and is the only major American non-profit working solely in the Middle East for 40 years

In fiscal year 2008, ANERA delivered more than $50 million worth of donated medicine and medical supplies into Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon.

ANERA helps local institutions become more self-sufficient and effective in serving their communities. Every project is planned in consultation with the communities that ultimately benefit — an approach that ensures relevancy and commitment, and secures the long-term viability of the projects.

West Bank Aid

ANERA first started its humanitarian aid work in the West Bank in early 1968, soon after it was occupied by Israel and thereby detached from Jordan. After several years of focusing on the crisis relief needs of Palestinian refugees from the 1967 war, ANERA began in the mid-1970s to focus on job creation and sustainable development projects for all needy West Bank communities affected by the crisis.

Jordan Aid

ANERA has maintained a relief office with four local, full-time staff in Amman, Jordan since 2004. Jordan has historically been a safe haven in a highly troubled region, receiving waves of Palestinian refugees since 1948 and now struggling to accommodate displaced Iraqis. ANERA works with persons of all nationalities in need in Jordan and we are committed to expanding the scope and scale of our aid activities in the coming years.

ANERA Provides Iraqi Refugee Children with Educational Opportunities in Jordan

…(IRAQ) the most significant displacement crisis in the Middle East since the dramatic events of 1948….”

Antonio Guterres, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees

WASHINGTON, D.C., Friday, November 2, 2007.

American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA) will provide educational opportunities to approximately 1,000 Iraqi refugee children in Jordan, aged 6 through 12, with support from a $725,000 grant from the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (BPRM). Jordan’s King Abdullah opened a window of opportunity for ANERA by overturning a Ministry of Education restriction on education to anyone lacking a residency permit.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates that approximately 750,000 refugees have fled to Jordan since the Iraq war began over four years ago.

Private gifts have continued and multiplied to now include support from thousands of individuals.

ANERA has led the way on many fronts, with innovative projects in health, education, and job creation that benefit thousands of people in virtually every village and town. Understanding the importance of positive civic engagement in mitigating the effects of protracted conflict, we have applied our resources and expertise in strengthening the service capabilities of key Palestinian municipalities, educational and health institutions, charities, and agricultural cooperatives.

Continuing our ambitious precedent of responding effectively to the region’s humanitarian crises, ANERA delivered emergency relief to poor families and communities during the Lebanese civil war, and conducted similar efforts in Jordan during the first Gulf War. We have spearheaded a number of long-term projects in Lebanon and Jordan, as well as in the West Bank and Gaza, aimed at lessening the negative and lasting effects of war on people’s lives.

Contact an ANERA Palestinian relief office in Amman, Beruit, Gaza City, Hebron, Jerusalem, Nablus, Ramallah, or ANERA headquarters in Washington, DC.

ANERA Palestinian humanitarian aid supports refugees and non-refugees living in Palestinian Territories (Gaza and West Bank), and impoverished communites living in Lebanon & Jordan

ANERA’s Status

ANERA is a registered 501(c)3 non-governmental organization and a founding member of InterAction, a coalition of over 160 US-based non-profits working to promote worldwide development. We received our sixth consecutive rating of 4 stars from Charity Navigator, an overseer of fiscal responsibility. This distinctive rank is earned by only 3% of rated nonprofits.

Your donations touch the lives of more than 1.5 million people throughout the Middle East, so they may live with the dignity we all deserve.

ANERA is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization. Your gift is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. By policy, all donations under $2,500 to ANERA cannot be restricted and are used for our overall purpose: to create opportunity and hope for people in the Middle East by improving health care and education and stimulating job creation.

.
With offices in the West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon and Jordan, ANERA employs more than 60 full-time staff who are locally hired and work with local partners.

Some Highlights of ANERA from 2007

(1) First Canadian Government (CIDA) award - $1.3 million to help children traumatized by violence

(2) An “A” rated charity by the American Institute of Philanthropy

(3) Construction of Najjad Zeenni IT Center of Excellence at Birzeit University

(4) Contributions to medical in-kind program doubled from $20 million to $43 million

PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN:

Milk for Preschoolers

Despite tremendous challenges - ANERA is still able to deliver fortified milk and biscuits into Gaza. Can you help us deliver more?

ANERA initiated the Milk for Preschoolers Program in 2003 when we discovered children in Gaza were suffering from anemia, vitamin A deficiency, and chronic malnutrition. Many were at risk of irreversible physical and neurological damage.
The program now provides 20,000 children in over 160 preschools with a daily box of fortified milk and a packet of fortified wafers.

This healthy snack ensures that the preschoolers get a good part of their daily nutrient requirements to build their minds and bodies. Teachers in the program use puppet theaters and storytelling to create lessons emphasizing good health habits. They also educate mothers about how to provide nutritious meals for their families on a low budget. Continuous monitoring of the nutritional status of the children is done throughout the school year.

Health & Relief

In the face of constant conflict and economic decline, health care providers strain to maintain supplies and keep current with ever-advancing medical practices. Parents struggle to keep their children well-fed and healthy. Clinics are overburdened with clients needing care. ANERA began its work in the Middle East by providing emergency relief immediately after the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. Today, after 40 years, ANERA continues its legacy of assisting local health care providers to deliver quality services to their communities.

We are building health clinics, training health care workers, combating malnutrition, and promoting doable actions that people can employ to protect their health and well-being.

At all levels, ANERA is ensuring that people increasingly have access to quality health care and a healthier life.

ANERA has been known throughout Gaza since the early 1980s, when we began working to stimulate job creation and develop sustainable projects. In 1985, ANERA opened a relief office in Gaza with just three staff members. Humanitarian aid projects focused largely on agriculture, a major source of livelihood in the region.

ANERA's crisis relief and aid office in Gaza focuses, among many initiatives, largely on agriculture aid for Palestinian refugees.

ANERA operates from our headquarters in Washington, D.C. with a streamlined staff of 13 who raise funds and direct projects and programs. We also have many offices in the Middle East, staffed by 65, primarily locally hired, highly trained professionals, who implement ANERA projects in partnership with local institutions throughout the West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon and Jordan.

ANERA delivered just under $50 million in donated medical relief last year to clinics in the West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon and Jordan. Our ultimate desire is a Middle East where every child has the opportunity to attend a quality school, everyone has access to medical care, and refugee families have the tools necessary to provide for themselves.

Our programs in medical relief, humanitarian aid, education and job creation directly benefit more than one million Palestinians, Lebanese and Jordanians in the Middle East every year. We recently designed and completed a fourth IT Center of Excellence for major Palestinian universities (with one more under construction in Gaza). Over 85% of the IT Center graduates find employment.

ANERA views relief, alleviating suffering, development and reducing poverty as part of a continuum of human need and human rights. In helping people meet these fundamental necessities, ANERA humanitarian aid contributes to achieving freedom from want for Palestinian refugees and impoverished communities throughout the Middle East, which is essential to creating a more stable and livable environment.

Community & Economic Development Tomato picking In Lebanon and Jordan, the economies have been struggling under the weight of regional conflict, plunging much of their already strained populations deeper into poverty. Ongoing conflict has also taken its toll on both Israeli and Palestinian economies. Closures further prevent many Palestinians from working at all.

Despite these obstacles, ANERA is helping men and women in the Middle East persevere through difficult economic times. ANERA is creating jobs that rebuild essential infrastructure, such as schools, health clinics, and water wells. We are designing job training programs and helping entrepreneurs set up small local businesses. With projects such as these, people are finding opportunities to become more self-sufficient and support their families and communities.

Education

Children's art work For many people in Palestine, Lebanon, and Jordan, poverty and conflict preclude the opportunity to get an education. Sometimes children must work to help put food on the table instead of going to school. Other children, who are disabled or orphaned, face additional difficulties finding a school that can address their special needs. Adults wanting jobs need affordable opportunities for additional training.

From kindergarten to post-graduate studies, ANERA is opening doors for people in the Middle East to access opportunities for learning. Through innovative projects that build new schools and classrooms, promote after-school programs, teach information technology, and help disadvantaged children go to school, ANERA is helping people of all ages uncover their potential.
