EDITORIAL:

This is Part IV in the series of articles on Chechnya. In any conflict either within the same country or between countries, it is always painful for the loss of lives of innocent men, women and children. It is already painful to the Global Ummah, that thousands of our innocent Chechen brothers, sisters and children have already been wounded, disabled or lost their lives by the brutal Russian military machine.

If Islam is really a RELIGION OF PEACE, and Islam strongly emphasizes the value of life, how could anyone justify the killings of innocent human beings by Muslims. Such innocent human beings include the innocent Russian men, women and children who happen to be in the wrong place and in the wrong time be it as passengers in a train, or students at a school, patients in a hospital, passengers in a airplane or audience in a drama theater.

WE NEED TO CONSTANTLY REMIND OURSELVES THAT TWO WRONGS, DON'T MAKE IT RIGHT.

The focus in this E-Zine is on the innocent Russian men, women and children wounded or killed due to terrorist actions by Chechens. There is a need for Muslims involved in killing innocents to deeply reflect and ask themselves as to why is it that they involve in such anti-islamic actions in terms of killing the INNOCENTS ? Do they really believe that by killing the innocents, they could achieve their political goals ? If you carefully analyze the various conflict zones around the world that involves Muslims fighting the non-Muslims, almost in all cases, wherever Muslims have involved in killing the innocents they have repeatedly failed to achieve their primary political goals. One should not be surprised of above final outcome, because there are good chances that Almighty Allah who established the RELIGION OF PEACE would not be inclined to fulfill the wishes of his people who violate his own commandments by killing the innocents and thereby demonstrate no value to INNOCENT LIVES.

This is an area where not just Chechens but many other Muslims from various nationalities have consistently made a big mistake by involving in terrorism resulting in deaths of innocents and without any hesitation we condemn such actions and urge other Muslim brothers and sisters around the globe to support what ISLAM REALLY STANDS FOR - PEACE.

EDITORIAL CONCLUDING NOTE:

There are about 1.5 billion Muslims around the world spanning across 57 Muslim countries and residents of almost all countries in the world. If you carefully analyze the Muslim victims across the globe, you will note that a majority of them became victims perpetrated by injustice and crimes by their own fellow Muslims.

This starts off at the level of the smallest social unit - the FAMILY, where certain Muslim men deliberately prefer to implement the local macho-cultural values and ignore the values espoused by our loving Prophet Mohamed (SAW) in terms of treating his own family members, nepotism in the workplace by Muslim bosses / owners who believe in using the "right connections" to move forward ignoring the issues of justice, discrimination et.c and all the way up to the ruthless Muslim Presidents / Dictators such as the current ruthless President Bashar al-Assad of Syria and the brutality of Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov against his own Chechens (specifically the rebels fighting for independence) against all civilized laws is but a SYMPTOM OF A LARGER PROBLEM in the Muslim World today.

Islam in essence, is the most beautiful religion that ever existed, but Muslims in various ways have deviated away from its true teachings and not surprisingly we are seeing a sea of problems facing the Muslims today.

We urge all Muslims to shift the attention from the mentality of US versus THEM to introspection of one's own inner self. It is high time to introspect oneself starting from a single Muslim and extending the concept towards his immediately family, local Muslim community and the Muslim nation & Muslim world at large. AMEEN.

This is Part III in the series relating to Chechnya. The focus in this issue is the brief history of Chechnya as a nation and its loss of national identity. Mention is also made of the two wars with Russia.

HISTORY OF CHECHNYA:
www.en.wikipedia.org

Chechnya within Imperial Russia and the Soviet Union. Following long resistance during the 1817-1864 Caucasian War, Russia finally defeated Chechnya and annexed it in the 1870s. The Chechens' subsequent attempts at gaining independence after the fall of the Russian Empire failed and in 1922 Chechnya was incorporated into Bolshevist Russia and later into the Soviet Union (USSR).

In 1936, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin created the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1944, on the orders of NKVD chief Lavrenti Beria, more than 1 million Chechens, the Ingush, and several other North Caucasian peoples were deported to Siberia and Central Asia, officially as punishment for alleged collaboration with the invading German forces; the Chechen-Ingush Republic was abolished. Eventually, Soviet first secretary Nikita Khrushchev granted the Vainakh (Chechen and Ingush) peoples permission to return to their homeland and restored their republic in 1957.

PART IIIb

FIRST CHECHEN WAR:
(Dec 1994-August 1996)

(Photo: Chechen women pray for Russian troops not to advance towards the capital Grozny, December 1994).

The First Chechen War, also known as the War in Chechnya, was a conflict between the Russian Federation and the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, fought from December 1994 to August 1996. After the initial campaign of 1994–1995, culminating in the devastating Battle of Grozny, Russian federal forces attempted to seize control of the mountainous area of Chechnya but were set back by Chechen guerrilla warfare and raids on the flat lands in spite of Russia's overwhelming manpower, weaponry, and air support.

The resulting widespread demoralization of federal forces, and the almost universal opposition of the Russian public to the conflict, led Boris Yeltsin's government to declare a ceasefire in 1996 and sign a peace treaty a year later. The official figure for Russian military deaths is 5,500, while most estimates put the number between 3,500 and 7,500, or even as high as 14,000. Although there are no accurate figures for the number of Chechen militants killed, various estimates put the number at about 3,000 to over 15,000 deaths. Various figures estimate the number of civilian deaths at between 30,000 and 100,000 killed and possibly over 200,000 injured, while more than 500,000 people were displaced by the conflict, which left cities and villages across the republic in ruins.

PART IIIc

SECOND CHECHEN WAR:
Battle phase: 26 August 1999 – May 2000

Estimate up to 25,000 killed and up to 5,000 "disappeared" in Chechnya (AI estimate)

Estimate 50,000 killed in Chechnya (GfbV estimate) More in neighboring regions, More than 600 killed during attacks in Russia proper. Total killed military/civilian: 54,402–74,402

(PHOTO:Russian artillery shells target militant positions near the village of Duba-Yurt in January 2000)

The Second Chechen War, in a later phase better known as the War in the North Caucasus, was launched by the Russian Federation starting 26 August 1999, in response to the Invasion of Dagestan by the Islamic International Peacekeeping Brigade (IIPB).

On 1 October Russian troops entered Chechnya. The campaign ended the de facto independence of Chechen Republic of Ichkeria and restored Russian federal control over the territory On 16 April 2009, the counter-terrorism operation in Chechnya was officially ended.

The exact death toll from this conflict is unknown. Unofficial estimates range from 25,000 to 50,000 dead or missing, mostly civilians in Chechnya. Russian casualties are over 5,200 (official Russian casualty figures) and are about 11,000 according to the Committee of Soldiers' Mothers.

PART IIId

According to Human Rights Watch in 2005:

“Disappearances” in Chechnya are so widespread and systematic that they constitute crimes against humanity; by some estimates between 3,000 and 5,000 have “disappeared” since 1999.

In numerous cases their corpses are found in unmarked graves or dumped, but in most instances
they are simply never heard from after being taken into custody . . . The majority of the bodies showed signs of severe mutilation, including flaying or scalping, broken limbs, severed finger tips and ears, and close range bullet wounds typical of summary executions. Examinations by medical doctors of some of these bodies have revealed that some of the deliberate mutilations were inflicted while the detainees were still alive".

(DISCLAIMER:

Our goal in this E-Zine is to educate our Global Ummah in terms of the depth and magnitude of the sufferings of our Chechen Muslim brothers and sisters. We strongly believe that most of the Global Ummah have very little information as to what exactly happened in Chechnya and its dark chapters of history.

We want to make it very clear in no uncertain terms, that we are OPPOSED TO TERRORISM whether by individuals, groups, organization or the State. The life of every human being is valuable and precious.

Our long term goal is to encourage one and all to come out of their individual symbolic boxes of religion, race, culture, ethnicity, nationality and work together for WORLD PEACE AND UNITY. Muslims following Islam which is a religion of PEACE
should in reality be on the forefront working towards PEACE but you know the reality probably better than us. This blog will continue its mission of PEACE because TRUTH MATTERS and the truth remains that ISLAM IS INDEED A RELIGION OF PEACE despite self-styled anti-Islamic extremists violating the core Islamic values in the false guise of ISLAM)
