VOICE OF GLOBAL UMMAH
Volume 122, March 14, 2010

In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent and the Most Merciful

LETTER FROM A READER:

Dear Editors:

Assalamalykum

This is with reference to your Global Ummah 119 volume which as always I find very informative and worth reading. In this context I wish to throw a light on the recent protests in Karnataka state, India regarding the publication of Taslima Nasreen's article by a Kannada daily. You have very precisely alluded to the events in India captioned 'Kashmir'. I wish to reproduce a news item appearing in 'The Hindu' dated March 2, 2010.

Protest against publication of Taslima's article by Kannada daily
:

"Shimoga and Hassan cities witnessed widespread violence on Monday following protests by Muslim Organizations against the publication of an article in the Sunday magazine section of Kannada daily. The article is a translation of an essay by Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen on wearing of the burkha by Muslim women and contains remarks that could be considered religiously insensitive and provocative.

There was large scale destruction of property. Reporters and photographers were at the receiving end, in stone throwing by angry protesters with several of them receiving serious injuries. The situation continues to be tense despite the imposition of curfew. Schools and colleges have been ordered closed on Tuesday. In Hassan too, curfew was imposed with markets and educational institutions closed".

Excerpts from the editorial of' The Hindu' dated 3rd March, 2010.

"Islamic fundamentalist organizations rooted in religious obscurantism have long been prone to sudden outbursts of irrational violence at the slightest provocation. The stone throwing and arson by the fanatics against the publication in a Kannada daily purportedly by Taslima Nasreen, on wearing of the burkha were a nasty challenge to the freedom of expression guaranteed in the Indian constitution----.
It is a great pity that after being hounded out of Bangladesh for her views on society and religion, Ms Nasreen has had to face the wrath of religious fanatics in secular India. She is now forced to live in hiding, avoiding all public appearances for fear of provoking radical Islamist outfits...".

My view is that the Kannada daily or the newspaper in question would have thought twice before publishing the article knowing fully well that it would offend the Muslim community, given that fanatics exist in all religious groups. The editor in question is solely responsible for the unrest. One wonders what the motive behind publishing the article was. At the same time, no one can take the law into his or her own hands and disrupt normal life. Can anyone restore the precious lives lost in the violence?

I request the readers to air their views regarding the above mentioned facts so that we all brothers and sisters of the Global Ummah will have better insight and better knowledge and can coordinate our communications global wise and make them more fruitful and productive, inshallah.

Allahafiz.

Ms. Najmunnisa Yusuf
Chennai, India.

(a) EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY COMMISSION FINDS BIAS IN NEW YORK CITY FIRING ARAB SCHOOL PRINCIPAL ALMONTASER
March 13, 2010 (condensed version)
By Richard Silverstein
(loonwatch.com)

(Debbie Almontaser)

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission found that the New York City Department of Education (DOE) discriminated against Debbie Almontaser, founding principal of the Khalil Gibran Academy, the City’s first Arab-language public school, when they removed her from her position. Readers of this blog may recall a ferocious campaign waged by Jewish neocons and Islamophobes like Daniel Pipes, David Yerushalmi, the N.Y. Post, and Stop the Madrasa against the school and Almontaser personally.

Matters came to a head when Almontaser was smeared over a T-shirt displaying the word “Intifada.” Her opponents made her out to be a supporter of Islamism and armed resistance because she explained the Arabic meaning of the word to a reporter, while not denouncing it sufficiently. When Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Klein dropped her like a hot potato, her days were numbered. After her forced resignation, she sued and lost. Then she filed a claim with EEOC for discrimination. The N.Y. Times reports on the finding:

A federal commission has determined that New York City’s Department of Education discriminated against the founding principal of an Arabic-language public school by forcing her to resign in 2007 following a storm of controversy driven by opponents of the school.

Acting on a complaint filed last year by the principal, Debbie Almontaser, the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission found that the department “succumbed to the very bias that creation of the school was intended to dispel and a small segment of the public succeeded in imposing its prejudices on D.O.E. as an employer,” according to a letter issued by the commission on Tuesday.

The commission said that the department had discriminated against Ms. Almontaser, a Muslim of Yemeni descent, “on account of her race, religion and national origin.”

This is a great deal for civil rights in New York and in America. It is a day that Arab-Americans can be proud. It is a day when all Americans should be proud. Debbie Almontaser turned to the federal government for redress and it did what it could to make her whole.

This is a day when Muslim-haters like Norman Podhoretz and his friends I mentioned above should hide their heads in shame (though they will shake their fists in defiance instead). Their bullying has been shown for what it is: un-American, unfair, unjust. We are better than the haters in Stop the Madrasa. The democratic system worked.

The commission asked the Department of Education to reach a “just resolution” with Ms. Almontaser and to consider her demands, which include reinstatement to her old job, back pay, damages of $300,000 and legal fees. Should the two sides fail to reach an agreement, the dispute will end up in court, her lawyer said.

"Are they waiting for anything except the Hour, to come to them suddenly? But its Signs have already come!" (Al-Quran, Surah Muhammad). As one of the signs, Imam Ahmad reported in his Musnad that Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-As (ra) reports , Whilst we were around the Prophet (saw) writing down, he was asked, "Which of the two cities is to be opened first, Constantinople or Rome ?" He (the Prophet) answered, "The city of Heraclius will be opened first!"

The Great Ottoman, Sultan Muhammed Fatih (rh) fulfilled the prophecy by conquering the City of Heraclius (Constantinople). Thus, remains the second part of the prophetic tidings to be fulfilled; Having being forced out from Andalusia and recently dispersed over the Balkan states, the city of Gaius Julius Caesar, Rome, remains. (e) NEW SHARIA PROPOSAL IN AUSTRALIA

Muslim Leader Wants Elements of Sharia in Australia
Sydney Morning Herald,
March 8, 2010

Paul Bibby

ELEMENTS of Islamic law - the sharia - should be legally recognised in Australia so that Muslims can live according to their faith, a prominent Muslim leader says.

Addressing an open day at Lakemba Mosque on Saturday, the President of the Australian Islamic Mission, Zachariah Matthews, said parts of sharia could be recognised as a secondary legal system so that Muslims were not forced to act contrary to their beliefs.

''Sharia law could function as a parallel system in the same way that some traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander law was recognised in the Northern Territory,'' Dr Matthews told the Herald after the session. ''I don't think we are so unsophisticated that we cannot consider a multilayered legal system as long as it doesn't conflict with the existing civil system.''

March 6, 2010

The PRUNE party has been launched in Granada. The first national political party to have a Muslim character has been launched in Granada. The Partido Renacimeinto y Unión España or PRUNE party of Spain, says it is open to all the world.

Based on Islam, and founded by the writer, poet and journalist, Mostafa Bakkach El Aamrani, it says it intends to contest the municipal elections next year in Málaga, Madrid, Barcelona, Murcia, Valencia, Oviedo and Toledo on a manifesto of ‘justice, equality and solidarity’. It was presented in a small restaurant in the Albaicín in Granada. The party’s statues were sent to the Ministry of the Interior in May 2009, and it received the go ahead from the Government on July 23 last year.

(a) NIGERIAN MUSLIM CRIMINALS HAVE BLOOD IN THEIR HANDS FOR THEIR ANTI-ISLAMIC ACTIONS AGAINST OUR CHRISTIAN BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN HUMANITY

NEWS24.COM

Lagos - At least 500 people were killed on Sunday in communal clashes near Nigeria's central city of Jos, a state governor's advisor said on Monday, revising a previous toll of around 100 dead.

"We have been able to make 95 arrests but at the same time over 500 people have been killed in this heinous act... by Fulani herdsmen," Dan Manjang said in a telephone interview.

Witnesses described how victims were caught in animal traps and fishing nets as they tried to flee their attackers, who hacked them to death in what appeared to have been a well-organised attack.

"Over a hundred people have been killed - most of them women and children," said a government official on Sunday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"Some of the children are less than one year old," he added.

But the raiders also set fire to dozens of houses in the nearby villages of Ratsat and Zot, all less than 10km from Jos and home to members of the Berom ethnic group.

"These villages were attacked by Fulani herdsmen killing scores of people and burning houses," Ratsat resident David Daniel Daniel told AFP.

Other residents and local rights activists also blamed the attacks on the Fulani ethnic group.

In Jos, Yusuf Alkali, a member of the Fulani ethic group, said he believed the attacks were a reprisal for the killings of four herdsmen two weeks ago when a Fulani settlement was attacked by ethnic Berom youths.

Officials displayed another 18 bodies at the morgue in Jos - the scene of inter-religious riots in January that left several hundred people dead.

But traumatised residents accused local officials of having turned a blind eye to the bloodshed.

This central region of Nigeria had been a regular ethnic and religious flashpoint.

An explosion of violence between rival ethic and religious groups in January left 326 dead in Jos, according to police although other human rights activists put the overall toll at more than 550.

In November 2008, the federal government sent in the troops after Christians and Muslims fought each other using firearms and machetes in clashes that followed a contested election in Jos.

Official figures put the death toll at 200, but rights groups Human Rights Watch said it the dead number more than 700.

(c) WHIPPING OF AFGHAN WOMEN

(ED NOTE: Nobody can deny that in general, there is still lot of room for improvement in terms of men treating women in legal, social, political and personal relationship levels. Muslims are no exception in this matter and in fact, given the gems of Islam emphasizing the kind and fair treatment of women, Muslim men have an added responsibility to treat women in a kind and best possible manner. In Islam a woman's consent is needed prior to marriage, and as indicated below such an expectation was violated started off a chain of negative, anti-islamic events. Below punishment should be condemned)

www.france24.com Feb 10, 2010

In some Afghan provinces, warlords still reign supreme. Under their authority, the treatment of women is bleakly reminiscent of Taliban rule; as this video of a woman being whipped in public goes to show. The footage, posted online by Afghani women's rights organisation RAWA, based in Pakistan, was originally aired by the Afghan TV channel "Tolo TV" on Feb. 18. When contacted by FRANCE 24, the Afghan channel told us that the scene had taken place in December 2009 in the Dolina district (Ghor province, central), and that the footage was filmed by one of its sources there.

According to Ghor governor Abdul Hai Khatibi, the two women flogged that day -- only one is seen on the video -- had been forced to marry against their will. Beaten by their husbands, they ran away from their respective homes disguised in men's clothing. After a month on the run they were caught by police in Chasht (Herat province, west), arrested, and sent back to their husbands.
Both women were sentenced to 45 lashes in public. In a statement made on Pajhowk Afghan News, the deputy chief of police of Dolina district, Jahan Shah, explained that the case had been handed over to the local warlord, Fazl Ahad. He decided to have the women punished for running away, but also demanded that the husbands, whom he deemed guilty as well, divorce their wives.

Greet Wilders
(Wearing a Yarmulke (Yamaka) is okay but not the Hijab)

Geert Wilders previously called for a tax on the Hijab, now a recent political event reveals a new tactic in his discriminatory political agenda. On a side note this is a good compliment to Danios’ article, as it ironically reveals that it is contemporary, if marginal Westerners who want to repress religious freedom and are advocating repressive conditions and restrictions on minorities akin to the ones in the fabled ‘Pact of Umar.’

A ban on headscarves for city council workers and in all institutions and clubs which get local authority money will be the most important point in the PVV´s negotiations to join governing coalitions in Almere and the Hague, says party leader Geert Wilders. The ban will apply to ‘all council offices and all other institutions and clubs which get even one cent of council money,’ he said.

The PVV is tipped to emerge as the biggest party in Almere and second biggest in the Hague. The ban will NOT apply to other religious items such as Christian crosses and Jewish skull caps because these are symbols of our own Dutch culture, Wilders said in his speech, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd.

Wilders is currently facing charges of discrimination and inciting hatred against non western immigrants and Muslims. He always maintains he is opposed to Islam, not Muslims themselves.

Greek Orthodox priest rushed to hospital; found guilty of looking Arab

We reported this in November of last year; Jason D. Bruce, a Marine reservist, physically assaulted a Greek Orthodox priest, mistaking him for an Arab (and thus a terrorist, since we all know that Arab = terrorist). Bruce hit the Muslim-looking man with a tire iron, chasing him for three blocks. The Tampa Bay Times had reported:

Tampa police: Marine reservist attacked Greek priest he mistook for terrorist

By Alexandra Zayas and Demorris A. Lee, Times Staff Writers

November 11, 2009
TAMPA — Marine reservist Jasen Bruce was getting clothes out of the trunk of his car Monday evening when a bearded man in a robe approached him.

That man, a Greek Orthodox priest named Father Alexios Marakis, speaks little English and was lost, police said. He wanted directions. What the priest got instead, police say, was a tire iron to the head. Then he was chased for three blocks and pinned to the ground — as the Marine kept a 911 operator on the phone, saying he had captured a terrorist. Can you imagine what would have happened if Bruce had done the same thing to a Jewish or black person? The book would have been thrown at him. Well, this was just a hate crime against a raghead. (Ok fine, he wasn’t really a raghead…but the point is that Bruce thought he was a raghead.)

Anyways, here’s an unfortunate update: James D. Bruce is getting off scot-free; the Tampa Bay Times recently wrote:

Charges dropped against Marine reservist accused of attacking priest in Tampa
By Colleen Jenkins, Kameel Stanley and Alexandra Zayas, Times Staff Writers

Bruce was (initially) arrested on a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. The case gained national attention and drew strong reactions from the public, most of it negative toward Bruce.

Sacramento Mosque Vandalized; Woman arrested

By Bill Lindelof

Police have arrested a woman suspected of vandalizing a Sacramento mosque on Tuesday.

Cynthia Ann Sunshine, 53, was arrested on suspicion of burglary and vandalism. She was booked into Sacramento County Jail and her bail was set at $25,000.

Police said that she went to the Muslim Mosque Association in the 400 block of V Street about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday. Once inside the Southside Park neighborhood house of worship, the woman is suspected of tearing several items off the wall and breaking them, a police activity log reported. She also threw some books, police said.

When confronted by congregation members, she took prayer items and fled, according to the log. Mosque members followed her and police officers arrested her shortly after 1 p.m. in Southside Park.

The mosque, which opened in 1947, is said to be the oldest mosque west of the Rocky Mountains.

Tennessee: Nashville Mosque Vandalized
11 Feb 2010

This could be the handy work of a left over from the Tea Bagger Convention, or some self-styled Knights Templar Crusader. The message is clear: “Muslims Go Home.” That is essentially the message preached by Robert Spencer, Pamela Geller and their fascist friends in Europe.

State, local and federal officials are investigating vandalism discovered this morning at the Al-Farooq Mosque on 4th Avenue South.

The words “Muslim go home” and several crosses were spray-painted in red on the exterior of the building, and an expletive and hate-speech filled note was left at the youth center, according to a board member of the mosque. “It was an unexpected thing,” said Salaad Nur. “It kind of shook us.”

Metro Police Sgt. Brooks Harris said he has notified the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation as well as the FBI to look for potential similarities with vandalism late last year at a mosque site in Murfreesboro.

Brooks was unsure if there was any physical evidence that might help them solve the crime.“The key issue is, we’re really looking at this together with our state and federal partners and doing everything we can to get to the bottom of this, prevent it, and if there’s a solvability factor, we’ll find it.”

FRANCE: Mosque Vandalised With Swastikas

Swastikas and racial slurs have been painted on the walls of a mosque in the town of Saint-Etienne, says a prominent French Muslim group.

The French Council of the Muslim Faith says the vandalism took place on Monday morning at the mosque in the Loire region, in the latest example of rising Islamophobia.

The Council says such vandalism has multiplied in France “in a very worrisome way” and repeated a demand for the government to create a parliamentary panel to study rising Islamophobia.

Muslim leaders are among those saying that a debate in France on the face-covering veil and a national identity debate have stigmatised Muslims and fed anti-Muslim sentiment.

Nazi slogans and pig feet were found in December in a southern France mosque.

(i) A Brit-Muslim Leader Forced To Dress Conservatively After Receiving Threatening Calls
OneIndia.com
March 7, 2010

(Ed Note: This is one problem that we see over and over again across the Muslim Community. We believe that a Muslim has NO RIGHT to impose his or her Islamic view on others. A Muslim is in essence violating Islamic peaceful values by making threats or committing violent acts in the process of imposing his Islamic view on others. Allah made it very clear in the Holy Quran "THERE IS NO COMPULSION IN RELIGION". Even a sixth grade student can understand above clear and concise Quranic verse. It is not clear why adult Muslims still are not willing to comply with above directive from Almighty Allah.)

London, Mar. 7 (ANI): A progressive Brit-Muslim woman councillor was forced to dress more conservatively after receiving death threats and sexually harassing phone calls.

Shiria Khatun, 38, told the police that callers threatened to kill her and her four young children.

In one call, they warned they would dig up parents' graves and bury her there instead. The Labour councillor in the controversial borough of Tower Hamlets is considered one of the area's most progressive politicians.

She was elected in 2006, worked for Ken Livingstone as a transport adviser at London's City Hall and frequently campaigns for more Muslim women to enter politics.

However, over the past year she has been the victim of a "sick" harassment campaign.

At first she was "too embarrassed" to call the police, but when the threats, mostly made in the Bangladeshi dialect Sylheti, targeted her family she decided to act.

"As a councillor I'm meant to be a strong woman and I didn't want to show that I was bothered, but it's gone too far," the Daily Express quoted her, as saying.

"They're really disgusting. They would talk about my Western clothes, my tight jeans and my body parts," she added. (ANI)

(j) Women Detained For Not Wearing Veil In Bangladesh
www.weeklyblitz.net
March 3, 2010

Golam Minhaz, an inspector with Detective Branch of Bangladesh Police at Rangpur district [northern part of the country] detained 19 women in various areas in the city for 'not wearing veils'.

Bangladesh: Women wearing a veil

It may be mentioned here that, according to Bangladeshi law, women are not required to wear veils, which is compulsory in a number of Islamist countries. Iran has imposed law for compulsory wearing of veils by women since 1979.

But, in Bangladesh this is for the first time that any member of law enforcing agencies were showing 'extra vigilance' in forcing women in wearing veils.

Subsequently, on hearing the news of such attitude of the police officer, a number of lawyer including K M Hafijul Alam, Mahbub Shafique and Imranul Hye filed a writ petition with Bangladesh Supreme court in a bench comprising Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and ATM Fazle Kabir seeking legal actions.

The High Court bench has ordered the Bangladesh government and members of law enforcing agencies not to arrest any women or girl for not wearing veils. The court asked several government officials including the home secretarty, Inspector General of Police and Inspector Golam Minhaz of Detective Branch to explain why the case should be investigated and legal actions taken against those involved in the detention of the women. The court also asked Inspector Minhaz to be present at the court on April 4, 2010.

Following this court order, it is alleged that, members of Detective Branch in Rangpur district are coming with a new story of arresting those women on charge of prostitution. On condition of anonymity, a source within Detective Branch told Weekly Blitz that, most of the senior officers in Bangladesh Police are sympathetic to Inspector Golam Minhaz for his role in 'upholding Islamic culture' within the society. Those senior officials have given secret directives to the Detective Branch in Rangpur to twist the case from allegation of not wearing veils to participating in 'illicit activities' by those held women

Noor fought for her life until Monday November 2, 2009, when she succumbed and died from her injuries. Noor was only 20 years old. Her father didn't just run over Noor; at the time he ran her down, she was walking in a parking lot with her fiancé's mother, Amal Edan Khalaf. The 43-year-old Amal Edan Khalaf was seriously injured.

This tragic story made national headlines when it was revealed that the girl's father, Faleh Hassan Almaleki, deliberately targeted his daughter and attacked her for becoming too "Westernized.".....

Some friends of Noor said that her father had taken her to Iraq and told her they were visiting relatives. Once there, he married her off and left her to fend for herself. Noor then had to find enough money to make her way back to America and, once here, she moved in with the fiancé she loved....

Family members told police that the father was upset that his daughter failed to live by traditional Muslim values, and prosecutors have also said Almaleki has admitted killing his daughter because she disgraced the family by not following traditional Iraqi or Muslim values. Faleh Hassan Almaleki was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault and two counts of leaving the scene of a serious accident. Police said Almaleki fled the country after the attack, driving to Mexico and later taking a plane to London. He was detained by British authorities and extradited back to the United States.....

While Noor was fighting for her life her brother, Peter-Ali Almaleki said that he loved his sister and that should she not have to be suffering from her injuries. But he added that the family lives by different cultural values. "One thing to one culture doesn't make sense to another culture," he added.....

(L) Three (Muslims) Held in Alleged Anti-Gay BB Shooting in San Francisco

San Francisco Chronicle,
March 3, 2010

Jaxon Van Derbeken, Chronicle Staff Writer

SAN FRANCISCO

Three cousins from Hayward have been charged in San Francisco with a hate crime and assault for allegedly firing a BB rifle at the face of a man they believed was gay, an attack the men videotaped, authorities said Wednesday.

Mohammad Habibzada, Shafiq Hashemi and Sayed Bassam, all 24, are scheduled to be arraigned today in San Francisco Superior Court. They are free on $50,000 bond apiece.

The victim of Friday's attack was walking on the 3200 block of 16th Street near Guerrero Street about 10 p.m. when a car pulled up and someone inside opened fire with a BB rifle, police said.

The man was hit in the face but refused medical treatment, said Lt. Lyn Tomioka, spokeswoman for the Police Department. He reported the shooting to police, who pulled over a car that matched the assailants' vehicle a short distance away and arrested the three Hayward men.

Investigators believe the assailants chose the victim because he appeared to be gay. When the men were pulled over, police found a video camera that was used to film the shooting, investigators said. Assistant District Attorney Victor Hwang, the prosecutor in the case, said the men are cooperating in the investigation.

Authorities are looking into whether the attack was isolated or whether there have been similar BB gun shootings elsewhere in the Bay Area. Police have been unable to find victims to support any additional allegations, but Hwang said, "We believe we have the evidence to show that there was targeting of individuals who they believed to be gay." He added, "We know about this one case. We want to know about if there are any other cases."

(m) MUSLIM FURY AT "HOLY CITY" BOOZER

A MUSLIM leader has blasted a pub for using the name of holy city Medina - branding it an insult to his religion.

The boozer in Dundee changed its name from Bar Rio to Medina Bar and Grill after a renovation.

But this has sparked outrage - as Saudi Arabian city Medina is the second-holiest site in Islam behind Mecca. Medina is also a term used for a market or trading centre in north African cities.

But Mohammed Bashir Chohan, chairman of the Dundee Islamic Society, last night said: "People are upset about it because Medina is a holy city. It does hurt when somebody misuses the name, especially if they are going to sell liquor." The issue has been raised with local MP Jim McGovern.

His spokesman said he was working with councillors including Labour's Mohammed Asif to "try to bring the parties together to reach a solution".

Yesterday a spokesman for Medina said there was no offence intended - but added they were unlikely to change the bar's new name.

He said: "The bar has a Moroccan theme and, as far as we were told, medina is the hustle-bustle of an old quarter of a north African city. There was no intended link to the second-holiest city of Islam."

(n) Religion Not a Factor in Wife Beheading, Judge Rules

Aasiyah Hassan and Muzzammil Hassan

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The founder of an Islam-oriented television station who is accused of beheading his wife is due in a Buffalo courtroom for proceedings in advance of his murder trial.

Muzzammil “Mo” Hassan is tentatively scheduled to stand trial later this month for the death of his wife, Aasiyah Hassan, last year. Pretrial motions are scheduled for Friday.

Hassan’s attorney plans a defense that includes claims that Hassan was abused by his wife and emotionally out of control. But prosecutors are fighting the use of a psychiatric defense.

The Pakistan-born Hassans started Bridges TV in 2004, in part to dispel negative Muslim stereotypes. Muzzammil Hassan was served divorce papers shortly before his wife’s slaying.

There was a case a while back in which a Muslim murdered his wife by gruesomely beheading her with a sword. The Islamophobic blogosphere jumped all over the incident and declared that he was motivated by Islam. What fueled their mirthful hatred further was that the murderer was Muzzammil Hassan who had created a television network, Bridges TV to dispel misconceptions about Islam.

It was obviously a terrible case of domestic violence and had nothing to do with religion and now the judge in the case has also said as much. Will the Islamophobes take back their smearing of Islam as the culprit in this case? Don’t hold your breathe.

(o) Euless Apartments (Texas) Refuse Apartments to Muslims

A Texas apartment complex was telling its employees to deny Muslims or Muslim looking people entry into or residency in the complex. Two brave employees, Daniesha Davis and Michelle Williams came forward and reported the discrimination.

EULESS — A North Texas apartment complex is facing accusations that it segregates Muslims in buildings away from other tenants — or refuses to rent to them at all.

The complaint comes from former leasing agents at the StoneBridge at Bear Creek complex in Euless. They say Muslims were routinely denied apartments even when there were vacancies.

“If somebody called over the phone inquiring about an apartment, we were told that if they have an accent or a different name that we are supposed to tell them that we didn’t have anything available,” said Daneisha Davis, who worked there for a year-and-a-half.

Michelle Williams was Davis’ co-worker. She says Stonebridge’s manager told her, on a regular basis, to turn away potential walk-in renters if they looked Asian or Middle Eastern.

“Make it undesirable for them to want to come back,” is what Williams says she was told. “Even though we were only 80 percent full, or 75 percent full. We had plenty of apartments we could’ve rented out.”

“She referred to them as ‘curry people.’ And they used curry to cook with, that they smelled bad and they were dirty,” said Davis.

For the duration of the time the women worked at Stonebridge, they say they were told there was one condition under which they could rent to Muslims: If they were all kept in the same two buildings of the 21-building complex.

“She definitely made it clear to both of us that she didn’t want other residents complaining about having to live next to ‘curry people,’” Davis said.

“Wow. Wow. That’s unfortunate,” said AbdulNasir Jangda, an Imam at the Islamic Association for the Mid-Cities. “When we start grouping people together, we’re creating a very divisive element. How are we supposed to understand and relate and appreciate one another if we can’t stand to live next together?”

In January, Davis filed a Federal Fair Housing complaint against Stonebridge, alleging discrimination. The complaint made, via e-mail, was sent on a Saturday.

The next Tuesday, Davis was reassigned to other properties inside the company. She has since quit and is looking for work......

(4) INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN DAY

A Pat on Woman's Back On International Women's Day

International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men.....

For the United Nations, International Women's Day has been observed on 8 March since 1975. In adopting its resolution on the observance of Women's Day, the General Assembly recognized the fact that securing peace and social progress fundamental freedoms require the active participation and development of women; and acknowledged the contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace and security.

It is a matter of pride that, despite strong gender biases existing in certain regions, half the world's population are women and at least one third of the world's official labour force is female, doing two thirds of the world's work. However, it is a shame that they receive only one tenth of the world's income.

About 25,000 brides are burned to death each year in India because of insufficient dowries..

According to UNICEF, 100 million to 140 million girls and women have undergone some form of female genital mutilation. Today, this practice is carried out in 28 African countries, despite the fact that it is outlawed in a number of these nations. A doctor friend of mine, while recently in Capetown to attend a medical conference, was witness to the horrible ritual of cutting of the clitoris and the stitching of the vagina (with just a small opening left for the menstrual blood to flow) of adolescent girls in Namibia, with full sanction of the village elders.

Rape as a weapon of war has been used in Mexico, Rwanda, Kuwait, Haiti, Columbia, and elsewhere.

Village Devda in Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan in India has earned notoriety for female infanticide. In the last 120 years, this village could marry only two girls (incidentally cousins), one in 1998 and the other in 2010, as there are no other girls to be married –the villagers boast of siring only male children and killing the females as soon as they are born.

After 14 years of mostly rhetorical and half hearted efforts, the women's quota bill to reserve 33% seats in legislatures for women is likely to become a reality this year. Dictated more by political compunctions, and less by noble intentions, this is undoubtedly a much deserved bonanza and truly a 'women's day gift'. Once passed by the Parliament and ratified by at least 50% of the state assemblies, one in every three constituency will be reserved for women. This is already sending shivers down the spines of many of our male members of the Parliament, as many of them feel the threat of losing their seats and looking at other career options. A national daily newspaper quoted an MP, echoing the mood of the male establishment, rueing that, "When we say 'YES', we may well be signing our own death warrants."

We are a heady mix of sensuality and nurturing; naughtiness and caring; exuberance and quietude; palliative and intoxicating. We are women and proud to be so.

(6) ON THE LIGHER SIDE OF LIFE:
It is time to de-stress and relax

(Ed Note: Thanks to Dr. Lewis for forwarding below information)

NON-LIVING THINGS TOO HAVE GENDERS:

TIRES: Tires are male, because they go bald easily and are often over inflated

SPONGES: These are female, because they are soft, squeezable and retain water.

HAMMERS: Male, because in the last 5000 years, they've hardly changed at all, and are occasionally handy to have around.

BATTLE OF THE SEXES CONTINUES:

WORDS
A husband read an article to his wife about how many words women use a day.........
30,000 to a man's 15,000. The wife replied, 'The reason has to be because we have to repeat everything to men.... The husband then turned to his wife and asked, 'What?'

CREATION
A man said to his wife one day, 'I don't know how you can be so stupid and so beautiful all at the same time. 'The wife responded, 'Allow me to explain. God made me beautiful so you would be attracted to me; God made me stupid so I would be attracted to you !

IS IT FAIR OF HOW CERTAIN WOMEN VIEW MEN ?

(1) One day my housework challenged husband decided to wash his Sweat-Shirt. Seconds after he stepped into the laundry room, he shouted to me, 'What setting do I use on the washing machine?' 'It depends,' I replied. 'What does it say on your shirt?' He yelled back, ' Liverpool .' And they say blondes are dumb...

(2) A couple are lying in bed. The man says, 'I am going to make you the happiest woman in the world.' The woman replies, 'I'll miss you...'

(3) Question: What do you call an intelligent, good looking, sensitive man?

Answer: A RUMOUR

(4) A man and his wife, now in their 60's, were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. On their special day a good fairy came to them and said that because they had been so good that each one of them could have one wish. The wife wished for a trip around the world with her husband. Whoosh! Immediately she had airline/cruise tickets in her hands. The man wished for a female companion 30 years younger...
Whoosh...immediately he turned ninety!!! Gotta love that fairy!

(5) Dear Lord,

I pray for WISDOM to understand my man; LOVE to forgive him; And PATIENCE for his moods.
BECAUSE, LORD, IF I PRAY FOR STRENGTH, I'll beat him to death.

(6) Question: Why do little boys whine?

Answer: They are practicing to be men.

(7) Question: What do you call a handcuffed man?

Answer: Trustworthy..

(8) Q: How do you keep your man from reading your e-mail?

A: Rename the mail folder 'Instruction Manuals'
